I don’t know what the big deal is. My wife and I feel that every day is special. No need to make one fuss when we have 365 fusses to plan.
Moshe Dreyfus - Baltimore, MD
The most "success" I've had is when I've made an intimate candle lit dinner of Fondu ... you can use meats, veggies, fruit. Feed each other playfully. Bon Chance Mon Amie!
Rich Aquilina - Manasas, VA
Ok, I just had to put in my two cents here.
It was Valentine's Day, I was in college on a break when I saw this guy. He was walking towards me and got down on one knee and professed to me "It's Valentine's Day and all I got was a card from my parents! Do you think you could make my day a little better and go to lunch with me?"
I went to lunch with him right then and there, which was so unlike me. A year later he became my husband! It's been 12 years, lunch alone is worth more than anything to me. (Lunch by the way was pizza and we played ski ball? Yikes!) By far that Valentines day out ranks any other.
So to sum it up, the best Valentine's Day gift you can give anyone is just a little time to make the day a little better. (Food is not a requirement, hehe)
Misty Leach - Davenport IA
Here is my Valentine tale: 11yrs ago I dressed up in my tux with red bow tie, cumberbun, and a dozen red roses and a picnic for two, I showed up at my wife’s office, sang “It had to be you.” Though the thought was there, I embarrassed my wife, got cat calls from the other girls at her office, and was told by Suzanne,” That she, loves me very much, but to never do that again.” I know she enjoyed the attention, and her co-workers have never let her forget. That was a great Valentine for both of us, she has never forgotten it, and has always reminded me to stay clear of her office…the truth is, I can’t fit in that old tux anyway…and she’s glad…LOL
Duane McCain - Orlando, FL
(note from Brad: Michelle is planning a romantic dinner for her Hunky Actor Husband Jon, featuring Cornish Game Hens. Knowing that Jon is a serious meat guy, I'm skeptical and have encouraged Michelle to reconsider. Here's a suggestion from LLIE Berton Chow of Santa Monica, CA)
Misha,
Cornish Hens are fine. Just have extra hens cooked in case he is very hungry. Or, wrap the hens in bacon… or filet mignon. And, have chocolate!
Many, many moons ago, in a former life, I received what I thought was a fun and quite creative gift for Valentine's Day...
a sparkling brand new set of shiny bright red wheel ramps for working on (under) cars!
And while perhaps not the "best" gift, and likely not a "romantic" gift, in the eyes of many people, it tickled me that my girlfriend knew what I wanted and needed (well, you now...), and she found at least one way to my heart...
and there may have been some other shiny bright red tokens exchanged that Valentine's Day, but some of those are probably at best unmentionable here (blush).
James Overton - Red Bank, TN
And for his current life, James continues:
Blair and I are not much into big celebrations and gift exchanges... so we keep with simple, heartfelt things, to express our love for each other... cards, favorite candies & treats, and such... and the most fun thing we give each other is sharing our time...
One of the most important things that I enjoy doing for Blair on Valentine's Day is give her flowers. If you think that is simple, read on. Blair gets three single roses from me on Valentine's Day, each with an accompanying Valentine's Day card... one at home at her bedside, one delivered by me to her office at mid-day, and another at our dinner together. Now, I suppose I could spring for the 20 bucks-a-pop + delivery for each of three single roses in cheap bud vases, and have them delivered impersonally by a harried driver from a local florist... but for me, this is about giving, and about spending time doing something for and all the while thinking about the woman I love. So, I go to a local grocery store on Valentine's Day morning, and from the floral cooler I hand pick the best three roses & the fullest sprays of babies breath & the nicest/best shaped greenery (you can laugh here, or scoff that I am cheap, but this grocery store has the freshest flowers & the best selection & the very best prices around)... and home I go to work my humble magic on the flowers and greenery and ribbons and such, and transform two antique hand-blown glass bud vases & one contemporary bud vase into three simple elegant floral expressions of my love from my own heart and hands...
For Valentine's Day (and our June 19th Anniversary, and Blair's July 15th & James' June 5th birthdays) we always plan a leisurely dinner at our favorite restaurant... a nearby authentic Italian place, Pastaria Italian Restaurant on Signal Mountain TN, that is sort of part neighborhood restaurant and part bistro... and the owners and long-term waitstaff know us for our regular visits and dinner celebrations we've had there for nearly 8 years... so, we bring a bottle of our favorite wine, and we linger over fresh green salads & fresh bread with olive oil/garlic/parmesan & steaming hot fresh Italian entrees & glasses of wine, and we wind down our dinner and evening by sharing a serving of tiramisu or dish of gelato...
The most delicious and most treasured and most important part of our celebration, is the pause for a simple lingering embrace and kiss and gaze between us, that simply says, "I Love You."
(please remember this last line... for Karen... for Jon...) :-)
